Happy Christmas!

Time is going so fast! It’s nearly Christmas…

I’ve been wanting to write a blog all week, but didn’t have inspiration. I started writing a couple of days ago, but when I finished writing I thought I would read what I wrote last year…and those were almost identical blogs… I deleted what I wrote and started thinking about what I could write about instead… I did a few more attempts to write a blog but it didn’t work out the way I wanted…the delete button was frequently used!!

What to write about? Everyone knows about all the negative stuff happening in the world and I don’t have to point that out again and I certainly don’t have to say that I wish the world would be a better place…I do wish that, but doesn’t everyone? I wanted to write about something positive…just to show that good things do happen as well. The inspiration came tonight, when I was watching TV.

Around this time of the year ‘Serious Request’ takes place in The Netherlands. It’s a fundraising event for International Red Cross initiatives. Public radio station 3FM started this in 2004 and it became a tradition. During this event two or three popular DJ’s are locked up in a radio studio (The Glass House) which is placed in a main square in a different city each year. Living on a juice-only fast, the DJs make an interactive, themed broadcast around the clock, while regular programming on the station is suspended. Everything happening can be followed on radio, TV and the internet. Funds are raised in a few different ways. While the DJs are in ‘The Glass House’, they play songs requested by listeners and visitors, in return for their donations. Celebrities and artists also donate personal possessions or performances for auction. Donations from the public and businesses are made into the project’s bank-account, but also by visitors depositing cash into the house’s letterbox. Next to that, people throughout the whole country run a variety of supporting initiatives, and in some cities more glass houses are popping up. This year’s donations will go towards an initiative from the International Red Cross to prevent children dying from pneumonia.

Two days ago a six year old boy called Tijn came to ‘The Glass House’ with his father. His father told the DJ’s that Tijn, who is terminally ill because of a brain tumor, wanted to support ‘Serious Request’ and by doing that save children who are suffering from pneumonia. Tijn’s idea was to paint finger nails. Someone wanting to get his/her nails painted had to pay € 1,– and people who didn’t want to get their nails painted should pay € 10,–.
His target amount was to raise € 100,–.
Everyone was touched by the little boy and of course he started with painting the nails of the DJ’s in The Glass House. Little did the boy know when he started with this…the boy’s appeal went viral and it’s headlining the news in The Netherlands. In the whole country people (even men and boys!!) are painting their nails and are donating money for Tijn’s initiative. It’s two days later now and while I’m writing this blog Tijn managed to raise  € 1.635.687 so far!! And there’s still one more day to go. ‘Serious Request’ will end tomorrow evening.
It’s beautiful to see how much effort people throughout the whole country put into initiatives to raise money for ‘Serious Request’. It brings you straight into the Christmas spirit!

Christmas…If you didn’t get in the mood for it yet…here’s a song that might help. Silent Night performed by Robb and the band for Slemish Sessions as part of their Christmas Sessions.

Christmas…it’s the time that always brings me warm feelings. It’s also the time that makes me think back of the year that has passed… Where did time go? 2016 went by so fast!! Thinking back is making me count my blessings…there’s a lot to be thankful for! So many great things happened.
Also behind the scenes…even though it may have seemed quiet, it’s been a busy year…a lot has happened. Robb released ‘To Be A Fool’ and he spent time to work on new songs with the band, followed by the tour of The Netherlands. After the tour Robb and the band did a few sessions and they continued working on new songs. At the moment we are preparing the release of the last single from the album Sleep Tonight, the title track. This song will be released in February. More news about this will follow soon!

This will probably be the last blog I’m writing in this year, so it’s a good moment to say thanks.
Thank you to all who’ve been reading and sharing my blogs this year. Also thanks to everyone who has been supporting Robb’s music!
Here’s a little holiday gift from Robb Murphy, a free download of ‘To Be A Fool (acoustic)’:

Merry Christmas and all the best for the new year!!

In the spotlight: Standing ‘O’ Project / Art of the Song

It’s Sunday night. After a really beautiful sunny day and a trip to a Christmas market this afternoon it’s time to relax… The perfect time to write a blog.
I’ve been writing a lot of blogs about everything happening behind the scenes and I thought it’s time for something different.

I wrote about the numerous opportunities there are for songwriters/musicians to spread the word about their music and the challenges that come along with that before. Over the years there’s one online community we came across that really stood out to us, The Standing ‘O’ Project. It’s about time that we put them in the spotlight!

What is The Standing ‘O’ Project?
The Standing ‘O’ Project is an online community for both fans and singer-songwriters. We were made aware of The Standing ‘O’ Project a couple of years ago. Back then it was a new community founded by Vivian Nesbitt and John Dillon.
John and Vivian are both singer-songwriters and former touring musicians. They understand like no other how difficult and challenging it is for singer-songwriters to spread the word about their music and to make a living from being a musician. About 12 years ago they started to produce a radio program, called ‘Art of the Song’, showcasing singer-songwriters. ‘Art of the Song’ can be heard online, via podcast, and on over 150 public radio stations across North America.

Both John and Vivian felt that they could do more for singer-songwriters though, which resulted in The Standing ‘O’ Project.
Together with Katie Mitchell (Chief Community Builder), they built The Standing ‘O’ Project-community, bringing fans and musicians closer together. Artists can sign up for free and fans can sign up for $5 a month. Unlike other streaming services who don’t pay artists very well, Artist Members of Standing ‘O’ Project receive a full 50/50 split of subscriptions to help support their music. All of it goes to the artists, not to big record labels or publishing companies.

Fan members get access to a wealth of exclusive music, video and interview content. Fans will get a closer connection through artist’s personal insights and stories. Over 300 artists already joined the Standing ‘O’ Project, so there is an enormous amount of music to find.
Next to that there’s an archive of complete Art of the Song programs with established artists that often include rare musical performances.

There’s not a better place for music lovers to find new music!
The short video below perfectly explains what The Standing ‘O’ Project is about:

Over the past couple of years we have seen The Standing ‘O’ Project grow.
Recently they introduced ‘Fair Trade Coffee House Music’. This a special curated stream of music from Standing ‘O’ artists for independent coffee shops worldwide.
Fair Trade Music, is available to any coffee shop wanting to support independent artists and wanting to show the social responsibility of playing background music that doesn’t exploit singer-songwriters. Shops earn a referral fee when their customers join the Standing ‘O’ community. Again…another initiative of which all Artist Members will benefit. Any coffee shop wanting to know more about this can get in touch through the following email address: support@standingoproject.com

Katie, John and Vivian passionately continue to support independent singer-songwriters. They keep coming up with new ideas and services of which Artist Members will benefit. It’s all for the love of music and singer-songwriters that they are doing this which makes The Standing ‘O’ Project very special. Their support really makes a difference. Without The Standing ‘O’ Project a lot of amazing music would be overlooked.

Over to you!

You can sign up as a fan for only $5 a month and there’s also an option for a free trial.
Robb Murphy also has an artist page on there where you can find his music and back ground information. You can also listen to an exclusive, very interesting interview John Dillon and Vivian Nesbitt had with Robb a while ago for their radio program The Art of the Song, by far the most in-depth interview Robb ever had.

Time to end this long blog…with a song…as always…
It’s the start of December, not long now before it’s Christmas, so here’s a song to get you in the mood! ‘When Love Is Tangled Between Friends’, Robb released this song last year along with a Christmas themed video. Watch & enjoy!
