North Star

North Star

The fire is wild tonight
Its dancing in your eyes
I move a little close
And say what no one knows

You taught me all I know
How love can grow and grow
I’m just a lonely soul
You know what no one knows

Save me from this quivering heart
Summer is kind and winter is cruel
Guide me and I’ll follow your light
I’ll be your North Star too

We’ll put our big coats on
And wrap our heads in wool
Then brave the icy snow
We’ll go where no one goes

And I may make you smile
A view that will never tire
We’ll hold each other close
And say what no one knows

Save me from this quickening dark
Summer is kind and winter is cruel
Guide me and I’ll follow your light
I’ll be your North Star too

Now silence falls on night
The world is out of sight
Our heavy eyes appear
Our Christmas Day is near

North Star, a song to close out the year. Robb wrote the song just weeks ago and decided to record it. The result was so good that we decided to share it with the world. A surprise release to celebrate the holiday season!

Have a listen! The song will take you on a musical journey through a glistening winter landscape; a timeless song guaranteed to bring a warm, fuzzy and festive feeling!

It’s exactly what I love about this time of the year….a warm, fuzzy and festive feeling… The house is warm and cosy with the Christmas decorations being up. A place to relax with a warm cup of coffee, tea or hot chocolate; a place to escape from the year-end madness.

Year-end madness…December… I have a love-hate relationship with December.
I really love decorating the house and the tree. Decorating the tree is always an exciting event. It’s a tradition to buy one new ornament for our tree each year. The children, who are teenagers now, still love that tradition! Our tree is a mixture of ornaments and almost all ornaments have a story or a memory attached to them, which makes our tree so special. I really love the warmth and cosiness of the house around this time of the year. Candles lit at night, Christmas lights on, curled up on the couch under a nice warm blanket and just relax.

But there’s also the year-end madness… At work pressure is building up… like there’s no time left and everything needs to be finished before the year ends. Next to that there are so many events and obligations; expectations are high. I’m always in two minds about everything during the December month. I’m enjoying the vibe, but I don’t like the amount of events… All events are nice, but they all seem to be taking place at the same time, everything squeezed into one month…  I’m always finding it a big challenge to live up to all expectations during the December month, because I don’t like to disappoint anyone. Every year again I wonder why we can’t just spread all of these events throughout the year…how good would that be?!

On the other hand I really love Christmas morning, unwrap our Christmas presents, have a late breakfast in our pyjamas before getting dressed and ready for family visits. I love watching films with the children. Yes, very cliché, but ‘Home Alone’, ‘How the Grinch stole Christmas’ and ‘Elf’ are sure being watched in this house! I love the atmosphere that comes with Christmas. People always seem to be more kind, caring and thoughtful towards each other, but it always makes me wonder why we need Christmas for that to happen. We collectively create this atmosphere and I really love it, but…why can’t we collectively create this atmosphere throughout the whole year? Being kind, caring and thoughtful doesn’t have to be limited to Christmas…

These conflicted thoughts and feelings always continue until New Year’s Eve. I like the excitement of ending a year and the fresh start a new year always brings. I like to think back of the year that has passed, count my blessing and think back of all the memories we’ve made and I like to look forward to all what is to come in the new year. On the other hand I’m happy that I survived the December month and everything turns back to normal again. I can’t wait to take down all Christmas decorations after New Year’s day, but at the same time I always feel a bit melancholy. One last look at the Christmas ornaments; thinking of the memories and stories attached to them one more time before they’re being stored in boxes again for a whole year.

Over to you! How do you manage stress during the December month? All advice is welcome! 😉

A little bit of news before I end this long blog.
Behind the scenes we’ve been working on a new website in the past months and it’s live now. Check it out! You’ll find news, pictures, music, videos, blog, tourdates and more!

Merry Christmas Happy New Year

Coffee time and time for an update…

It’s Saturday…lazy Saturday… it’s rainy and chilly in The Netherlands. After doing some necessary cleaning, laundry and tidying I just made myself some coffee. Perfect time to write a new blog.

The days are going by so fast… Time just really flies!
Robb returned from Italy last week and we’re back to work on the music. There is lots to do at the moment. The release of ‘Headstrong’ is coming up soon. The video for this song is almost finished.
Keep an eye on Robb’s social media sites to stay updated about the video and single release!

While the band started with rehearsals, I am sorting out final things for the tour of The Netherlands next month.
People who have been reading my previous blogs might think what’s there to sort out? Everything already was sorted?
Yes, gigs were sorted at an early stage, just like flights and accommodation, but now it’s time to do the promotional side of the tour and sort out the details. That means contacting all venues, radio- and TV stations to check up on things, talk over some things that aren’t clear yet. Provide info, press photos and a tour poster, make a press release to send to media closer to the tour. Last week I made a planning…travel time included and keeping in mind that there’s enough time to set up, chill and have dinner at some point. I also started making lists of things we need during the tour like water, fruit, stroopwafels, ontbijtkoek and more! Somewhere I have to fit in bacon pancakes…Not sure where yet… It’s all a lot of work, but it’s fun to do. 2015 Poster - master copy B

It’s fun and it’s special. What makes it special is the kindness of the people involved with the tour. There really is a large number of people involved … from venue owners, to radio/tv stations, from DJ’s to people who are lending us their skills, instruments and gear. Not to forget the support the band gets at home to be away for 10 days and also my husband who’s taking time off to take care of the children, while I am away during that week. Literally everyone involved is putting in effort to make this all happen. Always something to be very thankful for! One thing is for sure, with all the effort everyone is putting in, this will be a week in which we will make a lot of great memories again!

More news to share. ‘Headstrong’ will be featured on a compilation album, called ‘Ireland Laid Bare’. This album, initiated by Peter Smith, consists of various Irish artists/bands and will be released on the 16th of October. More info about this album and the release can be found here:

A song to end this blog with, Trump Card Hand. This song developed during the tour of The Netherlands last year. Robb and the band recorded the song not long after the tour. Listen and enjoy!

Headstrong

It’s a very lazy Sunday out here…
It’s raining and we didn’t have to go anywhere, so I decided to just stay in my jammies, nice and comfortable! Perfect day to just take it easy.

As you can read in my previous blog, Headstrong will be the next single from Robb Murphy’s new album ‘Sleep Tonight’.
What most people don’t see is what needs to be done to prepare a single release. Of course it starts with picking the song. Not always an easy thing to do. There are a lot of things to keep in mind when deciding which song from an album will be released as a single. Maybe the most important thing is to look at the feedback the album and songs got so far. Next is to decide which other songs will be included with the single. An album track? Record a new song? Live recording? A lot of other decisions have to be made as well. Sell the single as a digital release online? Have CDs or Vinyl copies manufactured?  Do it all? Shoot a video or not? Artwork needs to be sorted and a plan to promote it all is needed as well.

There will be a video for Headstrong. At the moment Robb is planning and sorting things out for a video shoot.
The artwork for Headstrong is finished. In the past few years Robb worked with the very talented Ronan Reid. He created the artwork for the album (and the singles from) ‘Take A Stand’ and also created the artwork for the album ‘Sleep Tonight’, the single ‘The Mysteries of the Heart’ and now ‘Headstrong’.

1.artwork Headstrong

Headstrong is one of the songs that features The Ulster Quartet. The song has a very infectious melody, it will make you smile and tap your feet!!

Lyrics:

Spiders creep across your skin like tickley fingers
Ice melts down your spinal chord like lights on a highway
Feels like nothing’s going your way, you’re in over your head
Not smart, heart is in the car park pining for home time

You haven’t really lived
You haven’t really lived ’til your far from
The strongest and the wise
The hopeful and the few that lay between
I need my headstrong

Caffeine fuels you when your stressed, messed, chocolate or cinnamon ?
Irate people in your face waste your only coffee break
Trapped, caved, man your feeling brave, escape is priority
Sparks fly, cogs and leavers just die, ready for beddy time

You haven’t really lived
You haven’t really lived ’til your far from
The strongest and the wise
The hopeful and the few that lay between
I need my headstrong

Relax, cut yourself a break mate, your mind is a fragile thing
Brain waves crave a little respite and skin needs sunlight

do do do do do do
do do do do do do do do do do

You haven’t really lived
You haven’t really lived ’til your far from
The strongest and the wise
The hopeful and the few that lay between

You haven’t really lived
You haven’t really lived ’til your far from
The strongest and the wise
The hopeful and the few that lay between
I need my headstrong
I need my headstrong
