Sleep Tonight

It’s a beautiful sunny lazy Sunday out here. I’m sitting outside in the garden, enjoying fresh air and coffee. While drinking coffee I’m suddenly thinking about something that happened this week…a story worth to share.

Thursday… a beautiful sunny day. I worked in the morning and I was on my way home when I saw an old lady with a rollator standing at the sidewalk. She was looking around and seemed confused. Our eyes met, she started to smile and asked me if I knew where the nursing home was. The nursing home was close, just a few streets away, but instead of explaining her how to get there, I decided to walk with her. She seemed so confused. I told her that I would walk with her. That’s not what she had in mind, she didn’t want me to walk with her and apologised for bothering me, but I ignored her protesting and started walking with her. Along the way, the old lady kept talking. It turned out that she had left home early to go to her physio therapist. Usually a friend would bring her by car, but that day she decided to walk because the weather was so beautiful. On her way back she got lost and didn’t know the way back to the nursing home anymore. She went on telling me what she was up to that day. It was nearly lunch time and then she had planned an afternoon of playing bridge with friends. We soon got to the point where she could see the nursing home. She looked at me and while breathing a sigh of relief she thanked me for walking with her, said that I made her day and again she apologised. I told her not to worry at all and said that I enjoyed that 10 minute walk with her.

While walking home I kept thinking about the old lady… she was so confused. I don’t know how long she had been walking around that morning before I stopped and helped her, but I was glad that she made it to the nursing home safely. Situations like this make me stop and think. We all take so many things for granted, but how fragile we actually are… health, both physical and mental, is something so precious and valuable…

Mental Health…something you read and hear a lot about at the moment. It seems that people are talking about it more and it seems that mental health awareness is increasing. It’s still not enough though. For various reasons, too many people aren’t getting the help they so much need and the stigma around mental health is still there.

Which brings me to the music…
The title track from Robb Murphy’s second album, Sleep Tonight featuring The Ulster String Quartet is being released with the support of The Samaritans. It aims to raise awareness for mental health and the importance of communication rather than suppressing the condition. The single will be released on the 1st of June, all proceeds will go to the Samaritans Belfast. ‘Sleep Tonight’ the single, is already available for pre-release through the following links:

This event will take place at 101 Donegal Street, Belfast. Support by Randall Stephens Hall and Brigid O’Neill. Tickets are available now through the following link:

Sleep Tonight ~ Story behind the song ~ Bound For Your Arms

We have something to celebrate this week! Sleep Tonight, Robb Murphy’s second album, was released 3 years ago!

Sleep Tonight is a special album; an album that brought us so much. Everything we did in the past years was related to the album… the single releases, live sessions, tours, videos etc. Not only did it bring us many great memories, it also brought a lot of opportunities. Robb was able to work less and focus more on the music. Life has changed!

To close out the album we’re going to release one more single, which will be the title track “Sleep Tonight”, featuring the Ulster String Quartet. The single will be released in June. An animation video of the full album version was made by the talented artist Maria Becvar. We’ve collaborated with the Samaritans to help promote Mental Health awareness and acceptance across all borders. The Samaritans will receive any proceeds.

Below some stills of the video:

The album Sleep Tonight was written during a month long stay in a remote house in Italy.
When Robb started working on the album, he wrote blogs about the songs. Some of you may remember that, but it’s a long time ago and the blogs aren’t online anymore. The blogs were saved and it’s so nice to read them again!

Every song tells a story and memories are attached to each song. We’ll be sharing the stories behind the songs from the album Sleep Tonight over the following months, starting with “Bound For Your Arms”, the first song Robb wrote during his stay in Italy.

Here’s what Robb wrote about the song:

“Stop. Need Time. Slow Down. Breathe. Words that hang above my head for most of the year, it’s so easy to get caught up in all the things you need to do, but not what you want to do. I could easily be one of them people who run away to a secluded place, just making what you need to survive on. Maybe I will, but I do like normal life too, like anything after a while that you take for granted, when its gone you miss it.

Siena was one of our favourite places, a relaxed atmosphere. We would sit in the centre piazza in early evening, people watching, while the setting sun cast a slow moving shadow across the warm stone ground.

This album concept is all about back to basics, making something from nothing. I like food, similar concept here, back to basics, bread making, or even before that, fire starting!

Publicatie1

After a busy year in which everything seemed to be running into each other, I wanted to slow things down.  This was the first song I wrote when I arrived at the house in Italy.  The distant beat you can hear in the instrumental section is a pencil on my lyric note pad.”

Below you can listen to the album version of the song:

A couple of weeks ago Robb and the band played “Bound For Your Arms” live for ‘Sessions in the House’. Watch the video below and please like & share!

Stay tuned for more stories behind the song!

Nincompoop

The title of this blog might make you wonder if I’m alright…
Yes I am, it’s just that I learned a new English word yesterday, nincompoop…
Robb said it yesterday. During a conversation online he mentioned being a nincompoop. Nincompoop?? What’s a nincompoop?? A very strange and very wrong sounding word it is to me! As you’ve probably read in my previous blogs, I’m from The Netherlands, English isn’t my native language. We always understand each other, but every now and then a word is being mentioned that I never heard of before…which happened yesterday. I even had to check if it was appropriate to use that word as a blog title!
I really didn’t have a clue what nincompoop means. Explanation was needed for me to understand that nincompoop means, ‘silly or foolish person’.
The word made me curious though. Where does it come from? I just spent half an hour reading about it and the origin of nincompoop is a matter of speculation. There are numerous theories to find about that word. Some say it’s coming from the Latin phrase ‘non compos mentis’, meaning “not of sound mind”, others suggest that it is coming from the French phrase ‘ne comprend pas’, meaning ‘he does not understand’. It can also come from the Dutch word ‘poep’, meaning  ‘poop’.
Anyway, I will probably never forget this word. It’s the most silly English word I ever heard.

Onto the next ‘foolish’ subject.
‘To Be A Fool’ single release! Robb will release ‘To Be A Fool’ on April Fools Day along with a video filled with silly photos and video snippets from the band and fans from around the world.
The single is a remix of the original track taken from the album ‘Sleep Tonight’, featuring the Ulster String Quartet. Together with Alan Ladd, Robb also recorded an acoustic version of ‘To Be A Fool’.
This acoustic version came about accidentally. Alan was working on a dance remix of ‘To Be A Fool’. He was trying out some chords on the piano and it sounded nice on just the piano. They decided to record it and the result is an amazing acoustic version of ‘To Be A Fool’.
You can listen to both songs now!

‘To Be A Fool’ will be available on Bandcamp, iTunes, iTunes Music Player, Google Play Music, Amazon and other online music stores from the 1st of April.

Time to end this blog and why not do that with more silliness?
Robb was bored last week, so he took a lovely picture of himself…

Robb

A day later it was St. Patrick’s Day and I think Robb was still bored or simply had too much time on his hands…

Have a great week! And…remember to smile and do something silly…be a nincompoop!

New Music Video – You can be involved!

It’s Monday and it’s stormy outside. I don’t have to go anywhere today, so after doing some necessary laundry and cleaning I’m making some coffee…time to sit down. I’m  going through the emails, catching up on social media and looking at my “music-things-to-do-list”… The list is endless and I’m wondering what I’m going to start with today…
Thoughtlessly I’m drinking my coffee while I’m looking outside…the birds are having trouble to fly in this stormy weather. This weather makes me long for summer and sunshine!
While drinking my coffee I decide that the first thing to do is to write a blog. It’s about time! With no news to share we haven’t been active on social media in the past few weeks and I didn’t write blogs. It seems quiet but plans are being made for this year and we’re taking time to catch up on work and do some necessary things for which we didn’t have time in the past year.

But…there’s news to share now!
Robb is going to release the single ‘To Be A Fool’ on the 1st of April (no joke! 😉 ) and you can be in the new music video! All you have to do is send your silly pictures or videos of you, a friend, family member, your pet etc. (past or present!) to fool@robbmurphy.com

I can imagine that you’re thinking “Silly pictures? What kind of silly pictures?”
I’m not sure if the band agrees with me, but I think it’s good to show some examples. Over the years we took a lot of pictures and by now there’s a nice collection of silly pictures of the band… While going through the pictures I notice something…Kevin in particular is very photogenic, especially when it comes to silly pictures…

Get involved! We’re looking forward to seeing your silly pictures or videos!

There will be more news to share soon, so keep an eye on this blog, Robb’s Facebook page, Twitter or website to stay updated!

Listen & enjoy!

Stars

It’s Sunday morning and I’m waking up with coffee. The start of a beautiful day. The sun is shining, today temperatures will go up to 25°C. It’s still quiet in the house. The children are still sleeping. I love these moments…some quiet time in the morning. I’m never in the best mood when waking up. It’s always best to just let me be for a bit and don’t say too much in the morning. I always need time to wake up and get myself ready for the day.

I’ve not been writing much lately. Summer is distracting me. Last night I was sitting outside. It was a beautiful summer night. I watched the sunset. It’s something I really love. Seeing the colours of the sky change and while it’s getting darker seeing the stars getting brighter. Last week Wednesday there was a meteor shower and I spent a couple of hours outside star gazing. So beautiful to see! It always makes me realise how insignificant we actually are. While looking up I was thinking that a lot of people were probably doing the same thing as I did, star gazing… It’s weird to think that no matter where you are in the world, no matter how different things are in each country and how torn apart this world is, we all share the same sun, moon and stars.
While star gazing I always think about a lot of things. It’s always putting me in a thoughtful mood, making me count my blessings, making me remember people who aren’t there anymore but have a special place in my heart.

Last night I was thinking about all that is to come in the following months as for Robb’s music.
There’s a very busy time ahead of us. A single/video release is coming up and there’s the tour of The Netherlands in October.
Last week another date was added to the tour. It’s a very full and busy schedule! I’m looking forward to this week. It will be a tiring, but great week! Below is the tour poster with all dates.

2015 Poster - master copy B

The video for ‘Headstrong’ is in editing stages at the moment. One thing is for sure, the making of this video already got a lot of attention…online and during filming.
Imagine that you’re walking your dog on a quiet day and bumping into these animals…
In the first take of this scene, the Monkey slipped in mud and the Giraffe’s head got stuck in the trees …

Or imagine people’s reaction to this… The Ulster String Quartet playing while the animals are dancing around…

A few more scenes need to be filmed for this video, which will take place very soon. Keep an eye on Robb’s social media sites to stay updated about the video and single release!

A song to end this blog with…’Stars’, a song Robb wrote after he and his fiancée spent a night watching a meteor shower.
This is a live version of the song, recorded two years ago.

What is this light, that comes from above ?
Channeling time, channeling life

To see these starts for the first time
A brand new light in the sky

Now we know, yes we know
There is light, there is love
We will stand, we will fall
Still light shines on

I look at one star, pointed and bright
The longer I stare, I’m engulfed by the light

Out of sight in the day
Overwhelmed by light from the sun

Now I know, yes I know
There is light, there is love
We will stand, we will fall
Still light shines on

Now we know, yes we know
There is light, there is love
We will stand, we will fall
Still light shines on

We’ve got the light, we’ve got the light of stars in our hearts
We’ve got the light, we’ve got the light of stars in our hearts
We’ve got the light, we’ve got the light of stars in our hearts
We’ve got the light, we’ve got the light of stars in our hearts
